Energy storage may well be the next
big thing in the electrical world. In
particular, considerable effort and change is taking place in the arena of
storage batteries. Energy density in
battery cells has increased dramatically (and continues to do so). With that, comes an elevated potential for catastrophic
failure. Posted today is a video of two lithium
ion batteries forced into thermal runaway.
Watch this video to the end so you can get some idea of just how much
energy we are seeing in our small batteries.
Keep in mind that thermal runaway can
be triggered by overheating, overcharging, or physically damaging some battery
types.
