Last evening, that girl drifted from room to room within the house
while talking with her mother on a cell phone.
I heard only bits and pieces of the conversation whenever she wafted
near the living room where I sat.
I think we all use a different tone when talking with our
mothers. I was fascinated as I listened to
the sing-song dialogue advancing and receding throughout the house.
I had forgotten that careful tone—my mother gone for over thirty
years now.
