If commissioned to produce a single and simple illustration to
express the mark of humanity to date, what might you suggest?
Might you use a skyscraper constructed of composite materials and
glass to represent our accomplishments to date?
A computer?
Perhaps a spacecraft lifting itself through a layer of clouds?
Something as modest as a single lightbulb?
Or might you express the other side of what we do?
Maybe a missile dropping in against a city?
An atomic mushroom cloud above blue ocean waters?
A bloody handprint?

Awesome question Mitch! I'd use a pair of hands as a symbol. One hand would be holding a flower or a twig to represent man as the nurturer. The other hand would be holding an axe to represent man as the destroyer. Duality is inherent in our nature. It is neither good nor bad. It just is. What is significant is when the hand holding the twig or the flower is the dominant or winning hand in the constant struggle between the noble in us and the beastly.
ReplyDeleteI like where you have taken my question. Thoughtful.
DeleteI would use a tick stick. An item of seemingly simple form, but expressive of deep thinking and profound usage. By deep thinking I mean several layers of abstraction. The profound usage involves taking those layers of abstraction and using them to create a solid representation of the abstract to help build our societies foundations.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand why would you use a stick to beat a tick to death?
