  1. Animals do that. They are only concerned with survival. I'd like to believe that humans are capable of higher and meaningful pursuits. It's a choice.

  2. At the same time, you cannot pursue "meaningful" things for long if you've run out of things to eat.

  3. I disagree. The very focus of a meaningful life could be changing the verysocio-economic conditions that limit one's ability to meet one's basic human needs. I think that the natural instinct is to strive to improve one's lot and ensure a more sustainable supply of food instead of merely passively accepting being hungry all the time and not even making a peep to improve one's situation.
