Leaving the Grocery Store

She’s the product of five million parents
slamming doors on their own children.
You watch her strutting away in a gunmetal dress.
Eyes blue as a crying baby.

You can learn a lot from one glance
and her refusal to thank you for offering your empty cart.
Inside her is a magpie with a severed tongue
trapped inside a rusty cage.
