The Long Shadow

Only in dying light

does the silhouette of a lone pine tree

stretch across the entire open plain.

The shadow reaching out to take measure

and to touch, ever so lightly,

distant earth the tree’s roots will never taste.

The shadow of the tree,

for a brief time,

more imperative than the tree itself.
