Prickly Pear Bloom

I allow prickly pear cactus to grow in my yard.  Letting them to grow carries consequences.  First on the list of consequences is an occasional jab to my foot if I am not paying attention to where I am walking.  Second, is a fair level of disapproval from some visitors.

The reward, however, is some of the most spectacular teacup-sized blossoms known to me.  The colors range from vivid yellow to salmon to red.

Posted are two examples from the current blooming cycle of the prickly pear.
